Soldier Pile & Lagging Walls

Earth retention systems for deep excavations

For support of excavation

North Hill Residential Development 聽| 聽Alexandria, VA

A new development in Virginia required two retaining walls to grade the site for the construction of a multi-family neighborhood and townhome complex.聽 We built two massive, cantilevered anchored retaining walls to support both areas of the development. Wood lagging was used temporarily between the beams to the bottom of the excavation.

KLA Corporation 聽|聽 Ann Arbor, MI

The construction of a multi-level parking structure that would be partially underground in an area with limited disturbance allowed required a temporary earth retention system for the necessary excavation. We were contracted to design and install 21,700 sft of soldier pile and timber lagging earth retention with exposed heights reaching 28 feet.

What are soldier pile and lagging walls?

Soldier pile and lagging walls are retention systems 聽used to support soil loads for deep excavations.

How do they work?

Temporary beam and lagging anchored walls typically consist of H-beams driven or drilled into the ground with wood lagging installed between the flanges of the beams to retain the soil. Permanent beam and lagging anchored walls require permanent lagging such as cast-in-place face or precast concrete lagging.

Why do you need soldier pile and lagging walls?

Beam and lagging walls are cost-effective support of excavation systems used in soils above the water table. They can be installed with or without tiebacks and can be used in excavations up to 70 feet deep.
